In February 1989, petitioner filed a petition in Family Court alleging that respondent sexually abused Faith, his fiancee's six-year-old daughter, in April and May 1988. In March 1989, respondent denied the allegations and asserted as a defense that Family Court lacked personal jurisdiction over him because he was not a "person legally responsible" for Faith's care.
