Justice TULLY delivered the opinion of the court:

This is a consolidated appeal by codefendants, Thomas Shanklin (Shanklin) and Louis Pierce (Pierce), who were convicted of murder (Ill.Rev.Stat.1983, ch. 38, par. 9-1). Shanklin was tried by a jury, while Pierce was tried simultaneously at a bench trial. Both defendants were sentenced by the trial judge to a term of 32 years' imprisonment. Both defendants argue, on appeal, that the sentence of 32 years' imprisonment...
