Justice O'CONNOR delivered the opinion of the court:

Following a bench trial, Melvin Reed was found guilty pursuant to Ill.Rev.Stat.1981, ch. 38, par. 8-4(a), for the attempted murder of Earl Robertson, rather than guilty but mentally ill or not guilty by reason of insanity. Thereafter, the trial court sentenced Reed to forty years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

At trial, Robertson testified that he owned a service station at the southeast corner...
