The state charged the defendant, Juan Ortiz, with the crime of murder in violation of General Statutes § 53a-54a (a).1 At his trial, the defendant raised the affirmative defense of extreme emotional disturbance provided for by § 53a-54a (a), and introduced circumstantial evidence in accordance with General Statutes § 53a-72 to establish that he had been voluntarily
