Jay Ottis, a student in Stevenson-Carson School District No. 303, sustained a serious knee injury while wrestling in a physical education class taught by Albert McKee. Acting as guardian ad litem, his mother, Sharon, filed suit against the district and McKee. Trial commenced on August 8, 1988, and resulted in a verdict for defendants.
