Justice JOHNSON delivered the opinion of the court:

After a jury trial, Martin Solis, defendant, was found guilty of attempted murder (Ill.Rev.Stat.1987, ch. 38, par. 8-4) and aggravated battery (Ill.Rev.Stat.1987, ch. 38, par. 12-4). The trial court found that the offense of aggravated battery merged into the attempted murder conviction. Defendant was sentenced to a term of 6 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.
