After a jury trial, defendant, Vincent Williams was convicted of armed violence (Ill.Rev.Stat.1987, ch. 38, par. 33A-2) and attempted second degree murder (Ill.Rev. Stat.1987, ch. 38, pars. 8-4(a), 9-2). Before the trial began, the State nolle-prossed three counts of aggravated battery. (Ill. Rev.Stat.1987, ch. 38, par. 12-4.)
