LEWIS, J.:

The defendant appeals his convictions of rape and aggravated sodomy. As a result of these convictions, the defendant was sentenced to consecutive terms of 5 to 20 years on each charge, for an effective sentence of 10 to 40 years.

The defendant is a citizen of the United States but a native of Tunisia. He speaks English, along with five other languages. The victim, whom we shall refer to as J.C.,...
