This appeal questions the constitutionality of defendant's conviction for violation of the so-called "kingpin" section of our narcotics "trafficking network" statutes which mandates a life sentence with a mandatory term of 25 years without parole. N.J.S.A. 2C:35-3; L. 1987, c. 106, § 1, effective on July 9, 1987. Defendant contends that the judge committed "plain error" and violated the Ex Post Facto Clause,1
