On May 20, 1990, law enforcement officers intercepted and detained the appellant, Lucelly Abadia, immediately upon her arrival at Lambert International Airport in St. Louis, for the purpose of investigating a tip that she was smuggling cocaine. During her detention she consented to the search of her luggage which led to the discovery of cocaine and, ultimately, to her formal arrest.
