Justice JOHNSON delivered the opinion of the court:

After a jury trial, defendant, Daniel W. Johnson, was found guilty of first degree murder. (Ill.Rev.Stat.1987, ch. 38, par. 9-1 et seq.) Defendant was sentenced to a term of 80 years' incarceration in the Illinois Department of Corrections.
