Among the state's many powers, none is more fearsome than the power to take a child away from a parent. Challenged exercises of this power deserve close judicial scrutiny. This, in general, describes the case at bar. It is a case in which a mother and her children claim that the state violated their federal constitutional rights when it removed the children from their parents' custody and placed them in foster care...
