The plaintiff, Linda Wegman, brought an action in two counts against the defendant, Paul L. Pratt. In the first count the plaintiff sought both compensatory and punitive damages with respect to personal injury resulting from an alleged battery by the defendant upon her on July 5, 1988, in Ginny's Dugout, a tavern located in East Alton, Illinois.
