Jeffrey L. Sofferin brought an action alleging discrimination on the basis of religion in violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and section 1981 of the Civil Rights Act of 1866. The district court granted the defendants' summary judgment motion on the Title VII claim and later dismissed Mr. Sofferin's section 1981 claims. Mr. Sofferin appealed.
