Automobiles driven by William Schiller and William Knigge collided on a snowy January day in 1988. Both drivers claimed that the other was at fault. Knigge filed a property damage claim against Schiller. Schiller and his wife, who intervened, filed a counterclaim for property damage and personal injury and demanded a trial by jury.
