Justice GREEN delivered the opinion of the court:

On May 8, 1990, following a jury trial in the circuit court of Moultrie County, defendant Ronald E. Thomas was convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol. On the day prior to trial, defendant entered a plea of guilty to possession of cannabis. Defendant was subsequently sentenced to concurrent terms of 18 months' probation, with one of the conditions of probation being that he serve 40 days in the county jail...
