Justice GEIGER delivered the opinion of the court:

On June 13, 1989, the defendant, Larry Bronson, pleaded guilty to three counts of armed violence predicated on aggravated battery (Ill.Rev.Stat.1987, ch. 38, pars. 12-4(a), 33A-2). The trial court sentenced the defendant to concurrent terms of six years' imprisonment on each count and ordered him to pay restitution of $18,000 within five years to compensate the victims...
