Amanda Spraggins was born to plaintiff (Sandra Caraway) and her husband (Charles Spraggins) on July 24, 1980. She was subsequently diagnosed as having Crouzon's syndrome, a congenital deformity which results in a lack of normal growth in the cranio-facial region.
