The plaintiff, Joseph T. Ryerson & Son, Inc. (Ryerson), brought suit to foreclose a mechanics' lien on property owned by defendant Manufacturers Life Insurance Company (Manulife). Manulife had employed defendant E.W. Corrigan Construction Company (Corrigan) as the general contractor on a project requiring Corrigan to construct a new office building in Schaumburg, Illinois.
