The State's evidence tended to show that defendant and the victim were married in July 1974 and divorced in October 1985. The couple separated in July 1984 after the occurrence of the events leading to defendant's conviction. The victim testified that for six successive evenings beginning on 15 July 1984, defendant assaulted her sexually and subjected her to various humiliating acts.
