PAPADAKOS, Justice.

This case requires us once again to clarify our laws governing the right to a speedy trial in Pennsylvania.

Appellant was arrested on June 10, 1984, following a violent confrontation with the Philadelphia police. A criminal complaint was filed on the following day. Trial by jury before Judge Temin began on September 15, 1986, and Appellant was found guilty of simple assault and sentenced to a term of twenty...
