Following a bench trial, the defendant, Terry Freeman, was convicted of unlawful use of a weapon for knowingly carrying a handgun in a motor vehicle when he was not on his own land, his abode, or his fixed place of business. (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1987, ch. 38, par. 24-1(a)(4).) The trial court sentenced the defendant to one day in the county jail and ordered the defendant to pay costs of $78...
