Defendant, Janie Turner, was charged by indictment with the offense of murder (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1987, ch. 38, par. 9-1(a)(2)). The victim of the alleged offense was defendant's 2 1/2-year-old niece, Tiffany Booker.
