Hartwig Associates, Inc., is an environmental consulting firm that rendered consulting and expert witness services to Allan Kanner, an attorney whose practice is limited to environmental and toxic injury litigation. After Kanner failed to pay Hartwig for its services, Hartwig filed a breach of contract suit in federal district court.
