After uncommonly numerous pretrial proceedings spanning almost two years and including a controversial interlocutory appeal, appellants, who owned and operated a shoe store (the Hammad Department Store) in Brooklyn, New York, were convicted of multiple counts of mail fraud in a not otherwise distinctive criminal case.
