Justice GORDON delivered the opinion of the court:

Petitioner, Findley Mahaffey, appeals from the judgment of the trial court dissolving his marriage to respondent, Norma Mahaffey. He contends that the trial court: (1) erred in characterizing a lottery jackpot won during the marriage as marital property, and (2) abused its discretion in dividing the marital property.
