On August 26, 1986, Appellant's two adopted sons, Jason and Joby, died in a fire in a storage shed behind their residence. Appellant was convicted of the capital murder of Jason, but received a life sentence rather than the death penalty. See TEX. PENAL CODE ANN. § 19.03 (Vernon 1989).
