A jury convicted Paul Stepter of first degree murder of Beverly Payton, § 565.020, RSMo 19861, and first degree assault of William Jackson, § 565.050. The trial court sentenced Stepter as a prior offender to consecutive sentences of life imprisonment without parole and thirty years.
