Justice EGAN delivered the opinion of the court:

A jury convicted the defendant, Willie Davis, of armed robbery and robbery. Following a sentencing hearing, the trial judge found the defendant to be an habitual criminal and sentenced him to natural life imprisonment.

On March 18, 1985, Delores Collins, an employee at a fast food restaurant, opened the restaurant at 10:30 a.m. and went behind the register. The defendant entered the front door five minutes later...
