St. Louis police officers arrested George Croft in January 1988 when they found him sitting in an illegally-parked car with marijuana in plain view. While searching the car, the officers found a sawed-off shotgun. Croft was indicted for possessing an unregistered firearm in violation of 26 U.S.C. §§ 5861(d) and 5871 and for being a felon in possession of a firearm in violation of 18 U.S.C. §§ 922(g)(1) and 924(e)(1).
