This suit was originally filed against the City of Chicago by the United States government in 1973, a long, long time ago. The suit alleged that the City had discriminated on the basis of race and gender in hiring into and promoting within its Police Department in violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, 42 U.S.C. § 2000e et seq.
