The dispositive issue on appeal is whether the trial court erred in granting summary judgment to defendants. For the reasons set forth below, we affirm the trial court's order.

Under N.C.Gen.Stat. § 1A-1, Rule 56(c), a motion for summary judgment "shall be rendered ... if the pleadings, depositions,... affidavits, if any, show that there is no genuine issue as to any material fact and that any party is entitled to judgment as a matter of law...
