The defendant, Ted Williams, was charged by indictment with the attempted rape (Ill.Rev.Stat.1983, ch. 38, par. 8-4), and murder (Ill.Rev.Stat.1983, ch. 38, par. 9-1(a)), of his 12-year-old niece, Sharon McCambry.
