The defendant, James Moore, was charged by indictment on January 24, 1984, with the offenses of attempted murder (Ill. Rev.Stat.1981, ch. 38, pars. 8-4 and 9-1), aggravated battery (Ill.Rev.Stat. 1981, ch. 38, par. 12-4(a)), aggravated battery to a child (Ill.Rev.Stat., 1981, ch. 38, par. 12-4.3(a)), and cruelty to children (Ill.Rev.Stat. 1981, ch. 23, par. 2368).
