Justice HARRISON delivered the opinion of the court:

Following a bench trial in the circuit court of Madison County, defendant, Mark Urioste, was found guilty but mentally ill of murder, home invasion, armed violence, and attempted aggravated criminal sexual assault. (Ill.Rev.Stat.1985, ch. 38, pars. 9-1(a)(3), 12-11(a)(1), 33A-2, 8-4(a), 12-14(a)(1).) Defendant was sentenced to concurrent terms of imprisonment of 40 years for murder, 20 years each for home invasion...
