In March 1988 respondent Candy G. Anderson was charged with murder in the second degree in connection with the death of her infant daughter. Anderson's inculpatory statement was introduced at a preliminary hearing which was open to the press and public. Petitioner the Herald Company, publisher of the Syracuse Post-Standard and the Syracuse Herald-Journal, published an account of the hearing, including a detailed exposition of the substance...
