Defendant has been indicted, inter alia, on charges of mail fraud stemming from his 1984 campaign for reelection to the New York State Senate. The gravamen of the mail fraud counts is that defendant received illegal campaign contributions from an individual he knew to be an underworld figure and that defendant failed to disclose those contributions as required by N.Y.
