Defendant's case was consolidated for trial with that of his codefendant, Ralph Harvey Barfield. The cases were tried as noncapital cases. Both defendants pled not guilty; however, after trial to a jury, defendant Bill Vester Coker was found guilty as charged and Barfield was acquitted. Defendant received the mandatory life term.
