These days, it would take a nearly impenetrable insulation from the facts of everyday living for one not to recognize the magnitude of the illegal drug problem in the United States. This case brings into sharp focus the friction between an individual's right to be free from unreasonable searches and seizures under the Fourth Amendment and the State's efforts to stem the flow of illicit drugs into the community.
