This appeal arises from a jury award of compensatory and punitive damages and attorney's fees on claims brought under state tort laws and 42 U.S.C.A. § 1983 against Macon County, Alabama; Lucius Amerson, the former sheriff of the county; and James Williams, the chief jailer of the county jail.
