This case arises under ERISA, the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974, 29 U.S.C. § 1001 et seq. (1982). It concerns the right to severance pay benefits. The district court upheld the defendant employer's computation and payment of termination allowances under a plan promulgated in December 1985, effective January 1, 1986. The plaintiffs claimed they were entitled to larger allowances under "guidelines" circulated internally...
