Plaintiff, Patricia Richard, filed suit against Elmo Domingue and his insurer, State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company (State Farm), seeking damages for injuries she received in an automobile accident in Lafayette. Richard later amended her claim to add her UM insurer, American Employers' Insurance Company (American), as a defendant.
