Reprimanded for publicly airing grievances associated with their police chief's perceived lack of support for an emergency response team of which they were members, four patrolmen employed by the City of Trenton, Michigan, sued the chief of police, the mayor, and the city under 42 U.S.C. § 1983 for allegedly abridging their freedom of speech in violation of the First and Fourteenth Amendments.
