Shortly after his live-in girlfriend told him she was moving out, Roger Van Hoff found his shotgun and started firing. Both his father and his son were killed as a result. Van Hoff claims that at the time of the shootings he was depressed, confused, sleep-deprived, and under the influence of alcohol and amphetamines, and that he could not clearly remember what happened until shortly before trial when his memory returned.
