JUSTICE McLAREN delivered the opinion of the court:

Defendant, Thomas Cobb, was charged by indictment with one count each of murder (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1985, ch. 38, par. 9-1(a)(1)) and armed violence (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1985, ch. 38, par. 33A-2). After a jury trial, the prosecution nol-prossed the armed violence count, and the jury returned a verdict of guilty on the murder charge. Cobb was sentenced to a 32-year term of imprisonment.
