On October 14, 1986, defendant, Royal Nathaniel Wells, was found guilty by a jury of three counts of attempted murder, in violation of Iowa Code section 707.11 (1985). He was subsequently sentenced to serve three consecutive terms of incarceration, each of which was not to exceed twenty-five years.
