Plaintiffs are fifty-one current and former fire captains and fire lieutenants employed by the defendant City of Newport News. On April 4, 1988, plaintiffs filed this action seeking wages allegedly due them under the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (hereinafter FLSA), 29 U.S.C. § 201, et seq.
