FACTS

George Ranis, a resident of Greece, was injured in a fire on September 6, 1983 on the vessel Button Gwinnet, owned by Waterman Steamship Corporation. On October 10, 1983, Ranis started an action in this court against Waterman. Waterman's answer alleged that Ranis was contributorily negligent in causing his own injuries.
