The defendant, Daniel Patrick Collins, was tried by a jury and found guilty of the felony offenses of second-degree kidnapping, first-degree assault, and second-degree assault. Each of the first two crimes was also determined to be a crime of violence. At trial, the defendant raised the affirmative defense of impaired mental condition to each of the substantive charges.
