On June 3, 1986, the United States Coast Guard stopped a Panamanian ship, the M/V JUAN ROBINSON, as it sailed about 500 nautical miles east of North Carolina. Coast Guard officers, boarding with the master's consent, looked around the ship, became suspicious, obtained Panama's permission to proceed further, and eventually found about 20 tons of marijuana hidden in a fake fuel tank.
